You could drive by this place a thousand times and never know what you missed. It’s not a secret only the locals know about or some undiscovered place that we happened to stumble upon. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find someone who lives in San Diego and won’t tell you about La Jolla Cove. If you ask. And that’s the biggest reason why people never discover this tiny cove located just 20 minutes north of San Diego. They never know to ask.
If you are looking for spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, there are probably better places. If you are looking for huge swaths of beach to work on your tan, there are probably better places. If you are looking for the glitz and glamour of Southern California, well, you get the idea. If however, you are looking to connect with nature, this is an absolute gem.
On this tiny stretch of beach (where all the people are way back in the distance) are not only opportunities to swim but opportunities to swim with seals. You see, over 300 of them call this area home and I would venture to say that not a day goes by without a sighting. They will literally sleep right next to you on the beach, and though signs caution you that they can and will bite, just be respectful and you have nothing to worry about.
Bring the kids, bring the family, bring your friends and anyone else you want to share this amazing experience with. Nature and these seals are something to be respected, and as long as you do that then this will be a magical place for many years to come.
